Artist's Comments

The Snowy Mountains. Just at the snow line where the trees finish at Kosciosko National Park.
Kosciosko is the national park and township located around Mount Kosciuszko, Australia's highest mountain. It is located in southereast New South Wales, about 354km from the state capital of Sydney. It is part of the Main Range of the Great Dividing Range. This is known as a Snowys Hut.
Today, we recognise Australia's heritage in many ways from grooves in sandstone shelf near a watercourse to stockman's huts. The huts we help to conserve and caretake are a polygon of styles suited to the needs of pioneers, of grazing and goldmining. Basic structures mostly, but each one as any caretaker knows, imbued with the character of the scavenging capabilities or leanness of wallet of the builder.

There are huts still standing that seem to defy gravity. Over the passing years since grazing ceased, there are many which have succumbed; a pile of weathered timbers and corrugated iron. In some places is just a pile of stones, the remains of a crude chimney.

The remaining 100 huts have become a haven for safety from blizzards, a social centrepiece and a full dimension of history, a heritage of how people lived in the first half of the 1900s. They are not relocated to a "village" or reconstructed, they are maintained as close as possible to the original fabric, structure and method of construction as the owners built them.

Destructive fires in January and February 2003 destroyed more than 20 of the huts remaining at that time.

Critiques

:icontangledweb:
If there was a way to combine the effects of this photo and "On Top of the World", I'd do it in a heartbeat. Though the other photo has more viewer attention and I appreciate the broader view of the house, I find it less challenging and intriguing than this one; many photographers would consider these trees a nuisance to be completely avoided. The natural light is perfect and are the arms cradling the small dilapidated house is endearing. I have two criticisms:

1. While I think obstruction of the house is fine, I think the tree limbs covering the front porch makes it a little uncomfortable and detracts from what the viewer knows is open space beyond.

2. The bush at the base of the tree in the foreground, which doesn't strike me as too terribly important, is stealing attention from the house which is the main subject matter.

My suggestion for a stronger composition is that maybe "On Top of the World" is too open and "Hold Me In Your Arms" has too much going on...and maybe instead of choosing to shoot immediately behind these trees or completing avoiding it is to shoot more among the trees. Again, very difficult, but I think it's possible with your gifted eye and trusty wide angle! One of my problems as a photographer is that sometimes I forget there's more than the overall charm of the scene and maybe it's worthwhile to take a couple steps forwards and be part of the scene than just analyzing it from a distance. To your credit, I believe you did that here, but still feel there's more hidden potential to be discovered.

I don't consider myself qualified enough to be able to give this image the critique that it deserves however i will do my best.

The whole image is stunning and keeps drawing me back to it. I like the use of the framing with the tree branches. The detail that you have shown throughout the whole image is exquisite. The colours and saturation look true to life. The subject really appeals to me and reminds of how far Australia has come in such a short time.

I would be quite happy to have a large size print of this in my home.

My only suggestion for a possible improvement would be if you had taken a step or two to the right which may have improved the composition a touch by showing a bit more of the hut.

Overall I think that it is a great shot and one of your best.

I myself have often frequented the Kosciusko National Park and I love seeing the old huts and our heritage.

I'm not too sure about the framing in this picture, it looks a litle busy. I'd like see more of the hut. Maybe vertical?

Seeing this picture on my messages page brought back memories though.

Hey Dave

Strange choice of aperture/shutter.

Was that intentional?

With a 16mm lens you shot with high shutter and wide aperture. Why didn't you optimise for sharpness by shooting @ f11 around 1/250?

Just curious
