Introducing the Bunker Boys
Malcolm, Brent, Keith, Gavin and David

The Bunker Boys

Formed with the purpose of a light-painting night shoot at Malabar Sydney NSW
Tuesday evening was humid cloudy windy but warm.
We made our way to the Fisherman’s Road Car park at Malabar and then walked out to the cliff faces.
There are several World War one bunkers, gun emplacements and  observation towers.
All accessible to the public.

We had five photographers, two Nikon, two Canon and a lone Olympus.
five tripods, a lot of commitment and concentration and also a desire to
enjoy ourselves.
Here is Brent, Keith and Gavin scoping out the area and getting the gear out

Bunker Three

I was already shooting. Times a passing and there’s a camera in my hand. Hello?
Lets shoot into the cloud obscured sun and grab a big bite of bunker.

Bunker Face Off

We decided on a view with a the field of rippled rocks in front of the bunker and lined up
five cameras, five tripods, five remote cords and got set.
The first exposure ranged from 3 to 5 minutes depending on camera settings and
was taken in near dark. This was our base shot to which other exposures would be added.
This is the result

Bunker Edge

The next shots involved 30 second exposures with Brent walking up the scene in narrow bands with a bright light source, painting in the rocks and highlighting the edges and shadows. We took 5-6 of these.

Light Painting

Next we found a large observation tower with four levels, covered in graffiti and littered with empty spray cans. An imposing sight in the night. That’s it in the background shot of The Bunker Boys above.

Mal me and Gavin went down into the bowels where we found a large room with two empty doorways and 10 empty window frames and commenced throwing light around in all directions. You will see results of this work later. Here is a teaser.

Graffiti Halls

The other two set about lighting up the tower from outside. Brent :iconbrentbat: with probably have a shot of that later.

Here is the one shot that I managed to get while everyone was packing up to move from bunker one to two. Since I has the wide angle and the sky was glowing I thought….
Brent fired some blue flash for me. This is composed of two shot blended.

Hope we get to do another shoot with each other soon.

Hi David, excellent write up mate. I've finally got around to working out the basics of DA (I think) so have posted a few shots from that night.

cheers
